Insurgency war: Cameroun indicts Jonathan 5

Insurgency war: Cameroun indicts Jonathan

The official visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Cameroun to discuss joint efforts to curb Boko Haram in the region has thrown up an indictment of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

A very credible Presidency source told Daily Sun that in the anti-terror war, Jonathan did not do much in forming a synergy with leaders of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries.
The source said during Buhari’s interaction with his Camerounian counterpart, Paul Biya, he disclosed that Jonathan isolated himself from the leaders of Cameroun, Chad and Niger. “The major complaint, according to Biya, is that Jonathan never or seldom, at best, picked his calls. He said most times he called, Jonathan neither picked nor returned his calls. And as a result, the integration of efforts that should have stopped Boko Haram’s foray and unchallenged run was lacking.”
Biya, according to our source, said he was sure that leaders of other neighbouring countries had the same experience, and therefore, questioned how Nigeria alone would have contained Boko Haram, knowing it is an international terror group with roots and connections in some other countries from where they get into Nigeria and carry out attacks.

A top Colombian model is facing the death sentence in China after she was caught with banned substance. A 22-year-old model from Colombia, Juliana Lopez, who was on her way to the Miss World Modelling Beauty Pageant through China, is staring certain death in the face after she was nabbed with a large quantity of drugs hidden in her laptop, reports Emirate 247.
According to the report, Lopez had stopped over in China to shop for items to stock her classy boutique back home when she was apprehended and with drug trafficking carrying the death sentence in that country, she could receive the capital punishment.
Shortly after she was arrested, her family lost contact and got in touch with the Colombian embassy but were shocked to learn she had been arrested and could face execution.
Chinese officials told the family Lopez was caught with a large quantity of a banned substance inside her laptop.
Her family is now desperately trying to raise funds to visit and cover Lopez's legal costs while the Colombian Foreign Ministry is reportedly assisting her as the investigation goes on, which is expected to take up to two years.

‘APC leaders trying to hijack President’s policies,’ Falana says

Falana also said that Buhari has received numerous suggestions on removing fuel subsidy and how to handle the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) but the arguments clearly lacked merit.
President Muhammadu Buhari meets with All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the House of Representatives on Monday, July 27, 2015.enowned lawyer, Femi Falana has said that some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are determined to hijack President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic policies and place them under the control of a few hands
Femi FalanaFalana also said that Buhari has received numerous suggestions on removing fuel subsidy and how to handle the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) but the arguments clearly lacked merit.
he legal practitioner made the remarks while giving his keynote address during the unveiling and public presentation of a book entitled: “Economic diplomacy and Nigeria’s foreign policy”, written by former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Musa Babayo.

Falana said:
“The national planning has been abandoned for market forces by those who control our country, and what is going on now, even from the APC, there are people that are mounting pressure on President Buhari to continue to run the economy of Nigeria in the interest of a few people and in the personal minority interest of captains of industry.”
“But I think the President answered them last week; you know their campaign now is that ‘you must remove fuel subsidy, you must devalue the currency, you must privatise NNPC of all institutions’ and the President said, ‘I am not going to privatise NNPC, I will break it into two for effective performance’, which I think is the best for our country”.
Falana also dismissed the PDP’s recent claim that Buhari’s administration is lacking clear focus and direction.

"I appreciate Buhari’s work so far" - US President says

He said Nigerians "understand that only through a peaceful political process can change take place.”
U.S. President Barack Obama meets with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari (L) in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington July 20, 2015. President of the United States, Barack Obama, has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his "reputation for integrity and clear agenda," which he said will move Nigeria forward.
Obama stated this at the ongoing meeting Buhari at the White House yesterday, July 20 where the two leaders are discussing, mainly, how to  end the Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives in the northern part of Nigeria.
Obama said, "It is a great pleasure to welcome President Buhari and his delegation here in the White House for his first visit since the historic election that took place.
"Nigeria is obviously one of the most important countries in the world, one of the most important countries in the African continent.
"Recently, we saw an election in which a peaceful transition to a new government took place. Nevertheless, the people of Nigeria understand that only through a peaceful political process that can change takes place.
"President Buhari came into office with reputation for integrity and a very clear agenda that is to make sure that he has been bringing safely security and peace to his country.
"He is very concerned about the spread and the violence that is taking place there and the atrocities and has a very clear agenda in defeating Boko Haram and extremists.
"I want to emphasise how much I appreciate President Buhari’s work so far. I have seen him put together a team so that we can do everything that we can to help him succeed and help the people of Nigeria succeed."
In his response, Buhari expressed gratitude to the US for its support during the 2015 general elections in Nigeria, saying the polls were free, fair and credible because of pressure from the US.

“We will ever be grateful,” he said.

Obama endorses Buhari's agenda for defeating group

Since Buhari's election, Washington has committed $5 million in new support for a multi-national task force set up to fight Boko Haram. Obama did not signal whether he might send U.S. troops to help train Nigerian forces.

U.S. President Barack Obama meets with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari (L) in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington July 20, 2015. REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueU.S. President Barack Obama on Monday offered strong support for Nigeria's new president, Muhammadu Buhari, saying he had a "clear agenda" for defeating the militant Islamist group Boko Haram and was working to root out corruption.
Speaking as he greeted Buhari on his first visit to the White House since his election in March, Obama said the two leaders would discuss ways to cooperate against the group, which has wreaked havoc in parts of the West African country.
Obama told reporters in the Oval Office that Buhari has integrity and "a very clear agenda in defeating Boko Haram extremists of all sorts inside his country."
Boko Haram has carried out multiple attacks in northern Nigeria, most notably the April 2014 kidnapping of 276 Nigerian school girls who are still missing.
The specific tactics Buhari will use against the group are still unknown, say experts who study the region.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the United States could offer intelligence to help the Nigerian efforts as well as support for communities hurt by the group.
Buhari's election was the first democratic power transition in decades, which Obama called "an affirmation to Nigeria's commitment to democracy," and the visit is meant to usher in a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
U.S. cooperation with Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had virtually ground to a halt over issues including his refusal to investigate corruption and human rights abuses by the Nigerian military.
Buhari's move on July 13 to fire military chiefs appointed by Jonathan clears the way for more military cooperation, U.S. officials say.
Since Buhari's election, Washington has committed $5 million in new support for a multi-national task force set up to fight Boko Haram. Obama did not signal whether he might send U.S. troops to help train Nigerian forces.
The United States is also looking to improve its economic ties with Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producer, especially as relations with two of Africa's other big powers, Egypt and South Africa, have cooled.
Obama called Nigeria one of the most important countries on the African continent and in the world and he commended Buhari's work in rooting out corruption that he said had held back Nigeria's economic growth.
Buhari was also expected to meet with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch later on Monday to discuss countering violent extremism.
